Our History

ISMA was started by a small group of Australian digital media lawyers and industry experts in 2014. At the time, tragic news stories were becoming more common across the globe of teenagers being harassed and bullied on social media sites by their peers leading some to commit suicide, and others being stalked online then being found murdered days later.

Individuals, businesses and even government were ill equipped to understand the laws surrounding social media and the associated risks. The advent of global digital technologies like social media had created a new battleground without borders, rules, or protections.

Today, ISMA is the world’s only non-profit organisation seeking to harmonise social media legislation and policies on a global scale.
ISMA is represented in 13 countries and has nearly 100 people on the team from around the world. This includes a Global Board, digital industry Expert Advisors, the ISMA Youth Council Committee and our volunteers.

ISMA is an impartial and independent organisation which receives no government funding. We rely on the generosity of organisations and individuals to support our Mission and Objectives.

People are being harmed because of a lack of clear, sensible social media guidelines. We need globally harmonised laws, better educational resources, and a simpler way of resolving online disputes. This is no small task, but I believe that when people come together with a common goal, nothing is impossible - Sara Delpopolo, founder of ISMA
